Deadly House Fire Takes The Life Of Elderly Resident In Rockland County

First responders raced to the New City home, after reports of a fire with one person possibly still inside the building.

NEW CITY, NY — A tragedy in a Rockland County home has left one person dead, according to fire officials.

The Clarkstown Police Department says that on Wednesday, around 5:35 p.m., officers responded to a Glenmere Road house in New City, after reports of a structure fire with a resident possibly still inside the home.

At the scene, officers encountered a single-family home with heavy fire throughout the structure, according to police.

The New City Fire Engine Company was on scene, along with several volunteer fire companies from Rockland County providing mutual aid in extinguishing the fire.

After a search of the home, firefighters found one person inside. They removed the person from the structure, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was brought under control soon after by responding fire crews.

"While the fire departments quickly contained and extinguished the fire an elderly resident died as a result of the incident," Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said. "I was on scene to thank and support our brave first responders for the heroic efforts displayed. Our prayers and condolences to the family of the elderly person who passed away last night."
