Dems: Rockland Republican Committee's Shameful Facebook Posts

The writer, Kristen Zebrowski Stavisky, is chairwoman of the county Democratic Committee.

To the Editors

A few days ago, the Rockland Republican Party shared our post congratulating the millions who marched in peaceful demonstrations aimed at protecting and preserving their rights.

Sadly, the Republicans did not share our post about the historic marches across the country to stand with women. They prefaced the post with an anti-Semitic rant meant to further divide our community and exacerbate hatred and fear. Their statement contained falsehoods, generalizations, and divisive rhetoric.

We share the concern of the millions of people who marched. It is unfortunate that that Rockland County Republican Committee again fails to understand the impact of President Trump’s policies, policies that will hurt Rockland Families. We also condemn the blatant lies and stereotypes applied to a religion and twisted for the Republican Party's political purposes.

We challenge the Rockland County Republican Community to talk about the issues. Where do they stand on women’s reproductive rights? Where do they stand on LGBTQ equality? Do they believe in science or will they join Trump’s effort to repeal environmental protections? Do they believe in a core tenet of this country, freedom of religion? Then they can start challenging us on our dedication to equality and justice in our community.

Unfortunately this is not the first time the Rockland County Republican Committee has posted on Facebook only to take it down after the comments illuminated the sobering reality of their rhetoric. Remember the sexist and offensive picture of a woman leashing a man and dragging him to the polls to vote for Hillary posted just after the November election? It is quite clear which party stands for women.
