East Ramapo Trustee Accused of Using Fake In-District Address

Protesters said renters live at his address, according to news reports.

The newest East Ramapo school trustee, Joe Chajmovicz, apparently doesn't live at the address listed for him by the school district, The Journal News reports.

The house is occupied by a family of renters, local protesters said they learned when they went to rally outside, according to the paper. District officials refused to give contact information for him to The Journal News. He has turned down interviews with the paper before.

Chajmoviez was the second of two peculiar moves by the East Ramapo Board of Education this summer.

First, announcing that they had unaccountably forgotten to swear in Trustee Sabrina Charles-Pierre — who is black, the only female member on the board dominated by orthodox Jews, and who ran unopposed in school district elections in May for the remaining two years of a vacated seat — the trustees annulled her election.

Then, they appointed Chajmovicz, a man no one in the public school community had heard of, to fill the term of Monsey resident Yakov Engel who resigned in May. Engel had cited work and personal responsibilities. His resignation was announced around the time of the budget and board vote, so it was a post that could be filled by appointment, not election.
