Hear the fascinating history of Jewish life in Kaifeng, China, which began during the Northern Sung Dynasty (960-1127), when the Jews of Persia and India traveled the Silk Road to Kaifeng.

Our speaker, a descendant of one of the original Jewish families in Kaifeng, will discuss the history of this unique community, including its origins, and how it preserved its identity under near-impossible circumstances, isolated from the broader Jewish world for hundreds of years. Learn about the many Jewish traditions that were maintained through the centuries as well as those that were forgotten, and be introduced to the feelings and attitudes of Kaifeng youth today, descendants of this community eager to discover more about their Jewish origins.

An accomplished speaker, Shi Lei is a graduate Henan University in China, and also studied for three years in Israel, including Jewish history and religion at Bar Ilan University, and Jewish texts and traditions at Machon Meir Yeshiva in Jerusalem.
