
A house fire at 51 Hansen Ave. blazed so fiercely that firefighters were unable to get to the garage where a man was trapped, the Nyack Free Press reported.
It started after an apparent explosion in the garage.
New City Fire Chief James Avaras told Nyack Free Press Editor Bill Demarest that the woman who escaped the home was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Clarkstown police said the front part of the house and garage were engulfed in smoke and flames when the first emergency responders arrived, minutes after receiving several calls at 11:30 p.m. Oct. 27. A woman who lived there met responding patrol units and told them her husband was still in the garage.
Attempts were made to search for the victim, but the flames were too intense, said P.O. Peter Walker of the Clarkstown Police Department.

The 65-year-old woman suffered severe burns, police said. The male victim, 67, was found dead in the garage.
More than 50 firefighters from the New City Fire Department fought the blaze, with help from Congers, Nanuet and Hillcrest and with Haverstraw firefighters on standby in case of other emergencies, according to NyackFreePress.com .
The fatal fire scene is being investigated by the Clarkstown Detective Bureau. The name of the victim and his wife are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, police said.
