Field Hockey: Clarkstown South Stops Clarkstown North, 2-1

The Rams looked to get even with the Vikings after being shut out in an early season match.

Crosstown rivalries between Clarkstown North and Clarkstown South continued Tuesday with a field hockey game that saw the Vikings of South defeat the North Rams at home in New City, 2-1.

Christy Kroll of South got the Vikings on the board first. After the early goal, both teams settled into a groove. The Rams defense had stepped up and looked much more sound. The Vikings defense has been stingy all season and had no intentions of allowing a goal to the Rams, (the Vikings shut the Rams out 2 – 0 earlier in the season).

South scored again when Kroll notched her second goal of the game. North seemed to be a bit distraught as the second goal came quite late in proceedings and the Rams sensed a similar fate.

The Rams fought to the bitter end. Rams Head Coach Danielle Trainor gave her girls an intense speech during the half and reminded them of the importance of scoring a goal. The North girls left the huddle yelling "1 – 2 – 3 Score!"

Emily Bookman was always a sturdy defender. She stepped into the action and knew how to move the ball out of her defensive zone safely. Kate Pederson was playing more of a defensive role than she had in previous games. This led to a secure defense for South that looked impenetrable.

With only 17 seconds on the clock the Rams broke through and got their first goal against South this season. The Vikings let one up, but they now were working with the clock on their side. Time expired and the match ended.

"We played the way we know how for the last 10 minutes of the match," said Trainor. The Rams did seem to play like a different team in the final minutes when they knew they were in trouble.

"We kept fighting and never gave up. Now we have lost our last four matches right at the end. With six games left we are looking to improve our record," added Coach Trainor.

"I feel that we did a great job executing what we practiced. We focused on passing this week and we did a great job out there today," said South Head Coach Jordan Turner. "We are looking forward to playing in sectionals and are trying to get our lineup together. Christy [Kroll] missed most of the season and it is good to see her play well coming back."

North still has home and away matches against the tough Mounties of Suffern and South is looking ahead to sectionals.
