Hudson Valley: Snow Squalls, Wind Gusts Wednesday

Expect rapidly changing conditions, the NWS says in its Hazardous Weather Outlooks and Wind Advisories. Here are details.

HUDSON VALLEY — Another day, another interesting weather forecast for the region. Hazardous Weather Outlooks have been issued for much of the Hudson Valley as snow squalls may pop up during the day and this evening. Strong wind gusts are expected to materialize today too, and a Wind Advisory has been issued for the Sound Shore. The National Weather Service also issued a Special Weather Statement for the mid-Hudson.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties: On Wednesday snow squalls will be possible, mainly in the late morning through the afternoon. This may bring brief low visibilities down to a quarter mile or less. Wind gusts up to 45 to 50 mph will be possible at times as well during the afternoon into early evening.

For southern Westchester: The Hazardous Weather Outlook warns snow squalls will be possible today, mainly in the late morning through the afternoon. This may bring brief low visibilities down to a quarter mile or less. The Wind Advisory warns of winds from 15-25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

For Dutchess and Ulster counties: Scattered snow squalls are expected today especially from 9 am to 1 pm west of the Hudson River and between 1 pm and 5pm east of the Hudson River. Expect rapidly changing conditions during any snow squall including near whiteout conditions, wind gusts up to 30 to 45 mph and a temperature drop. While any one snow squall should be short-lived lasting less than 30 minutes, hazardous travel conditions can occur including the potential for icy roads. Note that snow squalls are possible during the evening commute today.

By the way, this weekend the Hudson Valley may see record high temperatures. Highs will be in the mid to upper 50s on Saturday, the NWS says.
