
John A. Hayes, 86, passed away Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Greenwich Farms, Warwick, RI, surrounded by family.
John leaves his beloved wife of 64 years, Margaret (McDade) Hayes, his loving family, children, Margaret Hayes Cote (the late Jerry) of Wakefield, RI; John Hayes (Dorothy) of Rochester, NY; Lance Hayes (Kerry) of West Wareham, MA; Kathleen Laux (Paul) of Mt. Laurel, NJ; and Eileen Hayes of North Fork, CA; his 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was the brother of Ann Anderson of Morristown, NJ, Gertrude Scarpinato of Smithtown, NY, Michael Hayes of Deer Park, NY, Rosemarie Struck of Norwich, CT, Bernadette Flynn of Brooklyn, NY and Joseph Hayes of Albuquerque, NM and the late Alice Degnan, Jane Petterson, Antoniette Hayes, Eugene Hayes, Daniel Hayes and Matthew Hayes.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late John and Rose (Smith) Hayes, he lived in New City, NY for 45 years, moving to Florida and summering in RI in 2007. He resided in RI full time since 2010.

John was a proud Navy veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He retired from the New York Police Department as a Sergeant, last serving with the 32 precinct. He was also a collection manager for 18 years for Port Brokers Group in New York. He was active and a past commander with the New City American Legion and was a member of the Haverstraw Elks.
