Let's Play Pool: People Have Fun With Nanuet Marketplace Flooding
Bystanders watched as the flood attracted eager swimmers, daring drivers, and a monster truck.
Hurricane Irene may have closed down portions of Route 59 and surrounding parking lots, but that didn’t stop people from having a little fun with the situation Sunday afternoon.
People in bathing suits and a wet suit and others with inflatable tubes went for a swim in the parking lot of the Nanuet Marketplace as on-lookers gathered and took pictures and videos in front of Modell’s and Starbucks. A jeep was also mounted and driven through the water, which at points was as high as three feet above the ground. The water nearly submerged the front wheels of a red car stuck in the middle of the parking lot.
A monster truck-like vehicle appeared in the parking lot and gave on-lookers unique footage of an automobile with enlarged wheels that left the body of it untouched by the high water. The vehicles stirred the water and created a tide that at times reached the bystanders watching.

Although police shut down the portion of Route 59 in front of the Nanuet Mall earlier in the day, drivers braved the flooded street by driving their cars in either direction, five of them getting stuck. A little-used part of the Nanuet Mall parking lot was also flooded.
