Letters to Ramapo About 'Severe Violations' at Private Schools

Read exactly what the State Education Department said to Ramapo's fire inspector and town supervisor after double-checking their work.

State officials have done something official toward the issue of fire safety in Rockland County's private schools -- sent two letters to Ramapo.

Some firefighters and elected officials have complained for years about unsafe conditions in many of the private schools in the county, and particular those in Ramapo.

Now the state has focused on four schools which they actually visited: the Rockland Institute for Special Education, Bais Yaakov, Green Meadow Waldorf, and Bais Yehuda.

What they found is what State Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski called "a blatant example of the pervasive lack of code enforcement in Ramapo that I have been talking about for over two years."

Here are the letters Carl Thurnau, Coordinator of the Education Department's Office of Facilities Planning, sent to both Fire Inspector Adam Peltz and town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence.
