Man Killed By Car After Thruway Collision

The man was identified as a Cortlandt Manor resident. The crash closed northbound I-87 for five hours overnight.

UPDATE 12:52 PM — Nicholas J. Polao, who was hit by a car on the New York State Thruway after a car crash, has died at Westchester Medical Center, New York State police announced.


CLARKSTOWN, NY — A man who tried to cross the New York State Thruway after his car became disabled Tuesday night suffered life-threatening injuries when hit by a car, police said. The pedestrian was identified as Cortlandt Manor resident Nicholas J. Polao.

State Police had been dispatched to a property-damage accident on I-87 in Rockland County when they learned that one of the drivers involved had been hit by another car.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:43 p.m. on the northbound Thruway at mile marker 20.5.

Polao's vehicle became disabled on the left shoulder after the first accident. Police said he attempted to cross the road and was struck by a BMW operated by Zarita M. Holness, 53, of Washingtonville, NY.

Polao was transported to Westchester Medical Center for life threatening injuries and is listed in critical condition. Holness was not injured and showed no signs of impairment, police said.

The road re-opened at 4:56 a.m.

The accident was reconstructed by the New York State Police Troop F Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) and remains under investigation at this time.
