Measles State Of Emergency To Expire In Rockland County

The county executive will explain his rationale at a press conference Thursday.

NEW CITY, NY — The state of emergency for measles in Rockland County will not be extended. County Executive Ed Day will hold a press conference Thursday to discuss the reasoning behind the decision.

The fourth state of emergency went into effect June 24 and is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

County health officials have had emergency measures in place since March because of the ongoing measles outbreak.

As of Tuesday, there were 282 confirmed reported cases of measles in the county since the outbreak began in October 2018.

The county health department just announced free measles vaccinations for the month of August.

The state of New York recently enacted legislation that prohibits religious exemptions for vaccinations.

Anti-vaccine activists tried bringing a lawsuit to block the new law from going into effect but a state Supreme Court justice denied their request for a temporary restraining order July 12.
