Memorial Day 2022: 27 Events Across Rockland County

Volunteers are needed Saturday to place flags on veterans' graves at Mt. Repose and St. Peter's Cemeteries.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed 1 million Americans, shut down Rockland County in the spring of 2020, many public Memorial Day ceremonies, parades and other events will be held over the long weekend — and even before.

For the first one, coming up Saturday, volunteers are needed.

Saturday

Haverstraw: Leo Laders American Legion Post 130 will place flags on veterans’ graves at
Mt. Repose and St. Peter’s Cemeteries in Haverstraw, starting at 10 a.m. May 21. Looking for volunteers, meet by the front entrance to Mt. Repose at Route 9W and Route 202. Rain date is 1 pm on May 22.

Friday, May 27

Clarkstown: Memorial Day Ceremony at Street School Community Center at 11 a.m.

Saturday, May 28

Congers: The Veterans Memorial Association of Congers Inc. sponsors the Congers Memorial Parade. Parade starts at 10:30 am at Congers/Valley Cottage Volunteer Ambulance Corps. A Memorial Service follows at the VMA Building.

Sunday, May 29

Montebello: Annual Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony at 9:00 am at Montebello Village Hall.

Orangetown: Raymond W. DeMeola VFW Memorial Post 1615/Veterans Walkway of Hero’s Memorial Day Observance at 10:00 am, Independence Avenue and Lester Drive, Tappan.

Rockland County Veteran’s Coordinating Council hosts two Memorial Day Ceremonies:

  • Noon at Fredrick Loescher Veteran’s Cemetery, Brick Church Road.
  • 1:00 pm Gary Onderdunk Cemetery at Rockland Community College.

Countywide: Watchfires for the troops will be lit at 11:30 pm ceremony and burn for 24 hours at four locations in Rockland. Bowline Point Park in Haverstraw; Eugene Levy Memorial Park on Route 45 in Ramapo; East end of Piermont Pier; and top of Clausland Mountain Park in Orangeburg. Watchfires are sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of America #333.

Memorial Day, Monday, May 30

Stony Point: Memorial Day parade at 9:30 am corner of Jay St. and TenEyeck St. Veterans service at 8:30 am at Mt. Rest Cemetery on West Main Street. A Memorial service following at 10:30 at
Stony Point Town Hall.

Hillburn: Memorial Day parade ceremony starts at 9:00 am, at Ramapo Central School Administration Building and proceeds to the World War I Monument at corner of Lake Avenue and Fourth Street for a Memorial Day Ceremony.

Sparkill: American Legion Post 1044 Memorial Day Service at 9:00 am, held at the War Monument
in Triangle Square. At 11:30 am, Parade and Ceremony in Sparkill to start at Sparkill Firehouse and finish at Depot Square Town Park for the Memorial Day Ceremony, approximately at 11:50 am.

Piermont: Piermont Engine Hose Co#1 – Parade starts at 10:00 am in front of VFW Post 7452 of Piermont to Kennedy Park for a Memorial Day Ceremony.

Sloatsburg: Village of Sloatsburg with the Sloatsburg American Legion Post 1643 hold a Memorial Day program and parade at 10:00 am at Veterans Park. After the ceremony the parade proceeds to World War I Monument and concludes at the Sloatsburg Cemetery. Refreshments follow at the Sloatsburg Community Fields Pavilion.

Airmont: Memorial Day Ceremony at 10:00 am, by Town Hall

Pearl River: American Legion 329 to host annual Memorial Day Parade starts at 10:15 am. From Key Bank and proceeds south to Braunsdorf Park for a Memorial Service at 11:00 am

West Nyack

  • Memorial Day parade starts 11:00 am., Strawtown Road, from Clarkstown reformed Church to West Nyack Hamlet Green. Hosted by West Nyack/Nanuet Rotary.
  • Buffalo Soldiers and Friends of Mount Moor Cemetery Memorial Day Service at Mount Moor Cemetery, Palisades Mall 11:00 am.

Nanuet: The Naurashank Post 794 holds a Memorial Day service at 11:00 am at the Nanuet Veterans Monument across from the Nanuet Post Office. Service held rain or shine.

Haverstraw: Ceremony at World War I Monument, Mt. Repose Cemetery at 11:00 am.

Nyack

  • VFW 9215 & Post310, at Nyack, Civil War Monument area Memorial Day ceremony.
  • Nyack Memorial Day parade kicks off at 11:00 am. Parade route Main Street from Franklin Avenue to Broadway and turns onto Depew Avenue entering Memorial Park. Ceremony to follow at the base of World War I / World War II Monument at lower-level park.

Tappan: Post 1271 American Legion, Tappan and the Volunteer Fire Association – 9:30 am Fireman’s Memorial at the Tappan Firehouse; 11:00 am Parade from German Park with a Wreath Laying ceremony at Tappan Triangle.

New City: Ceremony at American Legion Post 1682 American Legion Way Parking lot 11:00 am.

Suffern: Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. Honor our Veterans as they march up Lafayette Avenue to the ceremony at Soldiers Monument. Parade begins at 11:00 am. Ceremony to follow.

Blauvelt: Blauvelt Lions Club Memorial Day Ceremony at 12:00 pm Lions Park. Light refreshments and water will be served after ceremony.

Orangeburg: American Legion Post 1199, Gun Salute 12:00 pm at 61 Hunt Road Orangeburg.

Spring Valley: Memorial Day Service at 1:30 pm , Memorial Park, 1 Veterans Dive, Spring Valley.

Stony Point: Memorial Day Commemoration of fallen soldiers with a presentation of the 18th century military fashion to be held at 2:45 pm. An artillery demonstration follows at 3:00 pm at 44 Battlefield Road. 845-786-2521, www.palisadesparkconservancy.org.
