More Measles: Outbreak Up to 105 Cases In Rockland

The number of cases in Brooklyn continues to rise, too.

NEW CITY, NY — Three more cases in three days were added to Rockland County's three-month-long measles outbreak. Health officials announced Monday that there are now 105 confirmed cases, with 1 suspected case being monitored.

Rockland isn't the only area where the outbreak continues to grow.

As of Jan. 2, there have been 55 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn in the past three months, according to New York City health officials. That's up from 17 as of Nov. 2.

The initial child infected with measles in the city was unvaccinated and acquired measles on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring. Since then, there have been additional children from Brooklyn who were unvaccinated and acquired measles while in Israel. Children who did not travel were also infected in Brooklyn or Rockland County, city health officials said.

The way to prevent measles is through vaccination.

If you think you might be infected with measles, call a doctor or health clinic before showing up. Because measles is highly contagious — the virus is airborne and can live two hours after an infected person has left the area — the way to prevent measles is vaccination.
