Mother’s Day in Rockland: Do Something Good for Mom and Mother Earth

Raise funds for Keep Rockland Beautiful and get outside with the whole family #MothersDay4MotherEarth

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — Mother's Day 2017 is a perfect time for a family-friendly activity that celebrates spring, acknowledges Mother Earth, and helps Keep Rockland Beautiful's mission to improve the health of the county's environment.

This Sunday you can help raise awareness and funds, and spend an afternoon at Rockland Lake with mom, family and friends by participating in #MothersDay4MotherEarth when KRB will attempt to create the longest yoga tree pose chain in the world at 3 pm.

“We are hoping for hundreds to turn out for this event, which will be documented by drone photography,” said Susan Wilmink, Development Officer for KRB. “To make a clear statement that goes beyond Rockland’s borders that we care about our environment. We hope the resulting photograph of people standing together as a forest of inter-connected trees, will symbolize how we can all can do our part to work in harmony with the environment…and give a hand to Mother Earth.”

After everyone strikes a pose during the event, participants can take a leisurely stroll around Rockland Lake. The event could help set at new Guinness World Record, so KRB is encouraging schools, sports teams, Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, companies and other organizations, to register together and create a ‘branch’ to help support the event.

Local yoga instructors will be on hand to help warm people up and stretch and teach how to do a tree pose – a simple yoga posture that only requires that participants can throw their hands up in the air, like branches.

Participants will receive garden gloves and other treats thanks to event sponsors Orange & Rockland and Wegman’s Supermarket.

Ascape Landscaping will be providing saplings to take home.

The JCC will be providing free yoga classes.

Alianza Furniture has sponsored a Snapchat geofilter so that everyone in attendance can Snapchat to their friends to help raise awareness.

Other sponsors include: Caribbean Food Delights, Green Meadow/Waldorf School, Lauterbach Law Office, Mercedes-Benz of Nanuet, Nyack Fitness, Nyack Pediatric Dentistry, Pink Entourage, Rockland Parent Magazine, SolarCity and Weld Realty.

Keep Rockland Beautiful is known for its grassroots efforts, among them county-wide cleanups and hands-on programs for kids and teens.

“Unfortunately, our work is never ending,” Wilmink said. “For example, every year thousands of volunteers gather to clean up areas of Rockland during the Great American Cleanup, but every year we need to return again. So the funds we raise are critical for continuing to raise awareness, purchase supplies and provide educational programming to prevent litter and improve the environment.”

Everyone is encouraged to take photos of themselves in a tree pose prior to the event and use the hashtag #MothersDay4MotherEarth to promote the event on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter leading up to the event to encourage others to participate.

Group discounted pricing is available on the KRB website at www.keeprocklandbeautiful.org .
