Nanuet Woman Accused of Stealing $123,000 from the New City Library

The former staffer has been indicted.

Former New City Library worker Barbara DuBois is accused of altering checks and pocketing more than $123,000 from the library.

The Nanuet resident, 48, has been indicted on grand larceny charges.

The alleged scheme was uncovered in May, when two New City Library officials talked to Clarkstown police about discrepancies they had found in invoices and payments.

Marianna Silver, who took on the role of acting director of the library after Maurice Freidman retired in March, told police she had been familiarizing herself with the primary service providers when she noticed the discrepancies. She said she contacted the providers and the library’s bank, and found that invoices and checks had been altered, according to the police report.

Clarkstown police investigated and arrested DuBois, charging her with grand larceny and falsifying business records. She was released on $5,000 bail.

According to the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, DuBois opened a bank account in the name of EBCSO, a fictional corporation, in June of 2013 at Sterling National Bank with herself as the sole signator on the account.

Between then and June, 2015 she wrote 13 checks to EBCSO with the New City Library account, for a total of $123,849.91.

New City Library does conduct business with an entity called EBSCO. The defendant switched the letters “s” and “c” when she opened this bank account under the fictional entity EBCSO in an effort to conceal her crime, the DA’s office said.
