HUDSON VALLEY — The timeline for this latest snow-and-ice storm has shifted somewhat since the National Weather Service issued its first winter weather advisory Sunday. While the advisory still goes into effect at 6 p.m. Monday, the folks at Hudson Valley Weather say the snow and sleet will be slower to appear from the south, beginning to fall around 9 p.m.

  • Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties: The National Weather predicts total snow accumulations of up to 2 inches and ice accumulations of up to around two-tenths of an inch.
  • The mid-Hudson Valley is forecast to get more snow and less ice: total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches and ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch.
  • Southern Westchester may only get a dusting.

The biggest concern is the prolonged period of icing in inland and northern sections of the region which is expected to make travel very difficult Tuesday. For the whole Hudson Valley, the NWS warns that this storm will bring slippery road conditions.

The biggest question mark right now centers on how quickly does the snow and freezing rain turn to rain and sleet.

"The snow/mix line has steadily shifted south over the last day or so… taking the Hudson Valley from concerns of an extended period of freezing rain, to an extended period of snow, with some mixing possible," said Alex Marra and Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather.

But the storm won't seem as sequential as that 72-hour marathon at the beginning of December. A look at the hour-by-hour forecast for northern Westchester shows that snow, sleet and freezing rain may all be coming down in the middle of the storm.

Here's that same time frame for Rockland County, where the mix is predicted to trend more toward rain and freezing rain.

Here's the hour-by-hour prediction for Dutchess County, where snow and sleet predominate.
