Officer Injured After Being Struck Car That Was Fleeing From Traffic Stop: Police

The injured officer was taken to the hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Haverstraw police said.

HAVERSTRAW, NY — A police officer is recovering after being hit by a car that was fleeing a traffic stop. according to police.

The Town of Haverstraw Police Department says that around 1:10 p.m. today, officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction on Riverfront Drive.

While officers were attempting to speak to the driver, the driver suddenly accelerated, striking one of the officers, police said. The vehicle fled the scene, and a description of the vehicle and license plate information were broadcast over the police radio, according to cops.

A responding police officer soon found the vehicle driving along West Street. This time, the vehicle was safely stopped, and the occupants were taken into custody without any further incident.

Haverstraw police say that the injured officer was taken to an area hospital, where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"This incident is one of many examples of the dangers our officers face every day while performing their duties," Chief John Gould Jr. said. "I am grateful that our officer's injuries are not life-threatening and proud of the swift and professional response by our personnel in quickly locating the vehicle and safely taking the individuals into custody. We will not tolerate actions that put our officers or community members at risk."
