Child Dies After Being Pulled From Water Off Haverstraw

Officials said the incident happened about 100 yards off shore.

HAVERSTRAW, NY — A child, who was pulled from the water in Haverstraw Bay Friday after a boat overturned with eight people aboard, has died. Authorities said the incident occurred about 100 yards off shore.

The 8-year-old boy was pulled from the water and taken to the hospital, but he did not survive, News 12 reported.

Six other children and one adult were rescued after clinging to the side of the boat that had capsized in Haverstraw Bay, the Journal News said.

After being brought to shore, they were taken to the hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia and exposure.

The child's name has not been released.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day said the entire Rockland community expresses its deepest regrets in the death of the child.

"The death of any child is both an unspeakable horror and a family's worst nightmare," he said in a post on Facebook. "Our collective condolences for the family of this young boy and may God bless him and his family."
