Reported Car Theft Actually Drunken Mistake: Police

The key was in the 2000 Toyota. Social media commenters have had a field day.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — A woman going home after having a few drinks during a visit to her boyfriend got in the wrong car, and finding the keys in it, started it up and drove home.

Ramapo police found this out because they were called Saturday by an Airmont resident who said her 2000 Toyota had been stolen from the parking lot of the apartment complex.

The car was found at the woman's home in Haverstraw. She now faces a felony charge of grand larceny and a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle.

And commenters on the Ramapo police Facebook page are shaking their heads. Two knuckleheads, they said — one for driving drunk all the way across the county and the other for leaving her car open with the key in it. Another questioned why anyone would steal a 22-year-old car.
