Rockland County GOP Committee Calls for NY Assembly Speaker to Resign

Local party leaders react to Sheldon Silver's arrest Thursday on federal corruption charges.

The Rockland County Republican Committee joins the New York State Republican Committee in calling on N.Y. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to resign.

Today’s arrest of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is extremely disturbing but unfortunately, not surprising. As perhaps the second most powerful politician in the state of New York, Mr. Silver’s arrest casts a long and dark shadow on the New York City to Albany “Corridor of Corruption”. Mr. Silver’s alleged violations of the public trust are astounding in both their breath and brazenness.

What is even more disturbing are the reports that the Moreland Commission may have been disbanded just as it started to investigate Mr. Silver’s “business activities”. The abrupt disbanding of that committee is testament to the depth of corruption in New York State politics.

Governor Cuomo’s assassination of the Moreland commission, just as it started to bear fruit, should be the U.S. Attorney’s next area of investigation.

Former Gubernatorial Candidate Rob Astorino raised this very issue throughout his campaign only to be attacked by the Governor, and his cohorts, as deceitful. Those attacks now ring hollow.
