Rockland County Measles Outbreak: Confirmed Cases Up To 143

The outbreak has entered its sixth month.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — The measles outbreak that has entered its sixth month in Rockland County has reached a total of 143 confirmed cases. There are also two suspected cases that the Rockland County Department of Health is continuing to investigate.

These confirmed cases are the total since the outbreak began in October and are not all active cases.

In the first four days of March health officials added four cases — one on March 1 and three more Monday — to the tally they began after a Rockland family returned from travel abroad with the dangerous virus and an international traveler came to the county while infected.

Rockland's outbreak is centered in its Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Most affected are yeshivas in the communities of Monsey, New Square and Spring Valley. So far, the county has lifted restrictions on 31 schools whose vaccination rates have risen to meet goals but 28 remained under the rules as of March 1.
