NEW CITY, NY — A police dog with the Rockland County Sheriff's Office killed a family dog in New City in Tuesday. Both the dog and his handler, Rockland Sheriff's Detective Dwayne Delfino, were injured in the incident, The Journal News Reported.

The Fordet family's dog Ginger was being taken for a morning walk when Roscoe, a German shepherd, attacked the 18-month-old cavapoo on Grand Street, TJN said.

Chief William Barbera, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, told the paper that Delfino suffered bites to the face and hands and Roscoe was also injured. Both the detective and the dog were treated and released. "It's heartbreaking for anyone to lose a pet like that," he said, according to TJN. "It's under investigation right now. We plan to speak to the family and find out everything that happened."
