Route 59 Crash At Airmont Road Proved Fatal To Montebello Man

His car was hit by an oncoming driver and pushed into a truck, Ramapo police said.

RAMAPO, NY — An 85-year-old from Montebello died after his Hyundai was hit by an oncoming driver and shoved into a nearby tow truck on Route 59 Saturday, Ramapo police said.

The crash happened not far from police headquarters at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Airmont Road and the busy east-west highway.

According to their preliminary investigation, it appears that a Mahwah, New Jersey woman driving a 2012 Nissan Rogue east on Route 59 entered the intersection at Airmont Road and crossed over into the westbound lane of Route 59 traffic. She struck a 2021 Hyundai Sonata. Both the Nissan and the Hyundai then struck a tow truck that was also in the westbound lane of traffic, police said.

The drivers, including the tow truck operator, a 58-year-old Airmont resident, were transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, police said.

The driver of the Hyundai Sonata succumbed to his injuries, police said late Monday night.

The crash is still under investigation by the Ramapo Police Crash Investigation Unit.
