UPDATE: Tappan Zee Bridge Crash Causes Friday Traffic Snafu

A tractor-trailer carrying scrap metal overturned on the Tappan Zee Bridge at the end of morning rush hour, fouling up Friday traffic on both sides of the Hudson River for hours.

When it occurred just before 9 a.m., the crash pushed the zipper barrier into the southbound lanes and spread metal debris all over.

It shut down northbound traffic completely for hours. Southbound was initially closed, then some lanes were re-opened.

Backups on the New York State Thruway stretched east to White Plains and west to the Palisades Parkway.

The driver was not injured, state police said.

All lanes were reopened by 1:30 p.m. Traffic had returned to normal at 3:37 p.m., Thruway officials reported.
