UPDATE: Severe Storms Sweeping Through The Hudson Valley

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect and a Flash Flood Watch went into effect at noon.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The lower Hudson Valley could get up to two inches of rain Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service predicts. Severe local thunderstorms are moving through the region. Damaging hail and high winds have been reported. Con Ed has issued tips for power outages.

The NWS says:

Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across the area from this afternoon into tonight ahead of a slow moving cold front. Multiple rounds of thunderstorms have the potential to move across the same area, leading to flash flooding.
* Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the watch area, with locally higher amounts possible.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued.

SAFETY TIPS

Con Edison offers the following storm tips to customers to help weather the possible effects of a storm:

· If you see downed electrical wires, do not go near them. Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by, tree limbs, leaves or water.

· Report all downed wires to Con Edison and your local police department immediately. If a power line falls on your car while you’re in it, stay inside the vehicle and wait for emergency personnel.

· If your power goes out, disconnect or turn off appliances that would otherwise turn on automatically when service is restored. If several appliances start up at once, the electric circuits may overload.

· Check to make sure your flashlights and any battery-operated radios or televisions are in working order. Make sure you have a supply of extra batteries. Weather updates and news on restorations of electrical service can be heard on most local radio and television stations.
