Hudson Valley Weather: Snowfall Projections Increase

"The next few hours will be some of the more impressive winter weather you get to see," says Hudson Valley Weather.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — With bands of snow falling at up to 2 inches per hour, Hudson Valley Weather has amped up its projections for total snowfall across the region.

"We are increasing snowfall projections to 10″-18″ region wide," said Bill Potter of HVW at 6 a.m.

Visibilities will continue to decrease; road conditions continue to worsen as the snow is falling too fast for the plows; and, Potter said, thundersnow is also occurring in isolated areas.

Expect snowfall rates of 1-3 inches per hour through 9 a.m.

"The next few hours will be some of the more impressive winter weather you get to see, with healthy dendrites of snow, coupled with extreme precipitation rates and gusty winds, blizzard conditions will occur at times through the morning," Potter said.

The National Weather Service said the snow will be heavy and wet before 8 a.m. becoming dry and powdery quickly thereafter.

Morning and afternoon commutes will be affected, said the NWS:

  • Impacts...Hazardous/dangerous travel due to snow covered roadsand poor visibilities. Blowing and drifting snow is likely. Local power outages with downed trees and power lines possible.
  • Winds...North 15 to 25 mph with gusts 30 to 35 mph.
  • Visibilities...one quarter mile or less at times.
  • Temperatures...Falling into the 20s.
