NEW CITY, NY — Clarkstown Town Clerk Justin Sweet is running for town supervisor. He plans to formally kick off his campaign at noon Monday outside Town Hall on Maple Avenue.

The field is open, since current Town Supervisor George Hoehmann cannot run again under Clarkstown's term limits law, which was just upheld in court against a challenge from Hoehmann, Councilman Donald Franchino, and resident Tom Foley.

Sweet has been town clerk since 2011, when he was appointed to fill out David Carlucci's unfinished term.

"I am running for Clarkstown Supervisor because I want to keep Clarkstown safe and make our Town affordable for our residents," he said in a statement to Patch.

Finances and development are the town's current big challenges, he said.

"As Town Clerk, I have demonstrated fiscal responsibility, consolidating an entire department, resulting in annual taxpayer savings of over $500,000. Clarkstown is facing threats from questionable development projects. I will implement new strategies to protect the character of our community," he said.

He also said his record of public service as Town Clerk shows he would serve residents' best interests over his own.

"I will fight for all of us to protect our neighborhoods and preserve the quality of life in the town that I have lived in for my entire life," he said on Facebook. "With your support we can keep Clarkstown a safe place to live and raise our families."

Before assuming the Town Clerk job, Sweet spent three years working at the County Legislature. He also served on the Clarkstown Zoning Board of Appeals and on the board of the New City Elementary School PTA.
