3rd Person Dies After Van Crash: UPDATE

Several of the victims had to be extricated by firefighters.

UPDATE 2:45 p.m. — Ramapo police reported a third passenger succumbed to injuries sustained from the van crash on New Hempstead Road Monday. The 20-year-old woman was a New Square resident.


RAMAPO, NY — Ramapo police updated information on a van crash on New Hempstead Road Monday afternoon, saying it killed two and injured nine people — 10 passengers and the driver. The original report said eight were injured.

The crash happened at 4:20 p.m. near Conway Court in the unincorporated section of the town. The 2009 Ford Econoline van left the roadway and struck a tree.

Several of the occupants had to be extricated by members of the Hillcrest Fire Company No. 1 and New City Fire Engine Co. No. 1. All of the occupants were transported to either Nyack Hospital or Westchester Medical Center. Two men, a 47-year-old and a 22-year-old, were pronounced dead at Nyack Hospital.

The Ramapo police were assisted on the scene by the following agencies: New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Rockland County Sheriff's Office, Hatzoloh EMS of Rockland County, Spring Hill Community Ambulance Corps, Village of New Square EMS.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Ramapo Police Crash Investigation Unit.
