Vikings' hopes washed away

Clarkstown South football falls to Suffern in home opener.

Thursday at Clarkstown South High School, two of the county's top football programs went to battle.

The Mounties of Suffern High school traveled to West Nyack to take on the South Vikings who were fresh off their 37-6 blowout over Mt. Vernon to open their 2010 campaign.

Senior leader Johnny Naclerio said, "There is just a different feel than last year and we've got a close group of seniors who are leading this team."

"We came to win," added Naclerio, who unfortunately suffered a leg injury in the blowout of Mt. Vernon in Week 1.  Naclerio, along with three other seniors are all on the mend. One of those three players is defensive lineman and running back Tyler Galloway, who has been diagnosed with a sprained ankle. "This is our time and our night," said Galloway.

When the teams headed to the sidelines the crowd of Brown and Gold knew that it was time for some Viking football. The Vikings entered Orlando Field to the beginning of the Dropkick Murphy's hit song "Shipping up to Boston." South started off strong with an opening drive that ended with Quarterback Tommy Maguire throwing the one of his two touchdown passes to bunning back Neil Munroe, which put the Vikings on the board 7-0. Toward the end of the first half, South was up on Suffern, 18-0, and all signs seemed to be pointing to another South victory. Even the weather was a dark and windy day resembling what some would call Viking weather. But then came a flash of lightning and crash of thunder and the momentum that the Vikings had built throughout the first half was gone.

The game was delayed for almost an hour due to the weather and Suffern came out on all cylinders shrinking the once 18 point deficit down to a 18-15 game then taking control with a 22-18 lead. The Mounties would go on to win 29-21 in a heartbreaker for Clarkstown South and their faithful in the bleachers.
