
Margaret M. (McGrath) Sterns, 85, of New City, NY passed away Monday, September 15 at home after a brief battle with cancer. She was born August 2, 1929 in Bardonia NY, to John McGrath and Dorothy Schultzel and lived her entire life in Rockland County. Margaret attended Pearl River High School and went on to work for the New York Telephone Company and Home Aides of Rockland County.
Margaret was married to her beloved husband, Richard (Dick) Sterns on April 24, 1954 at St Anthony’s Church in Nanuet. Margaret enjoyed cooking, nature, animals and her church, but her life revolved around her large, close family. She dedicated her life to helping others, raising her 6 children alone after the early passing of her husband Dick, working as a home health aide, assisting numerous neighbors and friends, and playing an integral role in helping to raise her grandchildren. Even though she faced adversity in her lifetime, she forever had an optimistic attitude, a warm smile and a generous heart for everyone she met.
Margaret is survived by her children Richard (Kathleen) Sterns of Chesterfield, MO; William (Susan) Sterns of Montgomery, NY; Catharine (Charles) Venezia of New City; John (Christine) Sterns of Rockville Centre, NY; Anne (Edward) Oakley of Sloatsburg, NY and Daniel (Laurie) Sterns of New City NY. She is survived and cherished by her 7 grandchildren for whom she was the love of their lives: Richard, Suzanne, Charles, Courtney, Kaylee, Daniel and Thomas. She is also survived by her 2 sisters Barbara Brennan of Bardonia, NY and Maureen McGrath of Branchburg, NJ and leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends. Margaret is predeceased by her husband Dick who died in 1970.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Thursday from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM at Hannemann Funeral Home, Inc. in Nyack NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 am at St. Ann’s Church in Nyack, NY. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Margaret’s name to United Hospice of Rockland, 11 Stokum Ln., New City, NY 10956.
