Volunteer For MLK Day: A Few Opportunities Left

Volunteer New York! calls you to join your community in action for the 2018 MLK Day of Service. The opportunities this year to honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and help fulfill his dream of building a "beloved community" run from Jan. 12-15 in Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

The annual MLK National Day of Service is a day supported by the Corporation for National and Community Service that is meant to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems and support local nonprofits.

Most of the projects and programs listed with Volunteer New York! are full, but there are still several to choose from:

Friday:

Food Sort and Pack
Volunteers will work alongside an Arc of Rockland group in Congers to sort food donations collected at their Annual MLK Celebration and deliver it together to TOUCH-Together Our Unity Can Heal, food pantry just down the road. Volunteers are encouraged to attend the community MLK Celebration event starting at 10:00 am, and assist in accepting donations, food will then be sorted & delivered after the event from 11:00 – 12:30. The goal of Arc of Rockland is to promote inclusive volunteering that include volunteers with and without disabilities and invites the community to join them on their MLK Day of Service celebration and to work with them to alleviate hunger in Rockland county.

Saturday

Mount Kisco Interfaith Food Pantry Drive and Stock
Families, groups and individuals alike are asked to bring food they have collected from drives, or that they purchased for this project. Then, bring food to the pantry where they will be taught how to date check it, weigh it in, and stock it. The more food a family or group brings, the more volunteer opportunity they have! ONLY THE FIVE ITEMS LISTED BELOW WILL BE ACCEPTED DURING THIS PROJECT. Bags of dried beans. (One and two pound bags only) Low sodium soup. Cereal. Pasta. (One or two pound bags/boxes only) No larger weights/quantities will be accepted. Canned fruit in water (not syrup).

Freshen up the Doles Center
Volunteers will come together to freshen up and beautify the Doles Center, part of the Mouth Vernon City School District. The Doles Center hosts several community events, after school programs and is a lifeline for those who live in the neighborhood. Some elbow grease and landscaping will make it shine once again.

Be a Life-Saver: Learn Hands-only CPR
Worldwide Community First Responder, Inc. (WCFR) will train volunteers in the Rockland community hands-only CPR and motivate community members to act in an emergency.

New Rochelle Public Library Annual Periodicals Shift
Working in the periodicals, a small group of volunteers will shift annual magazines and such from the shelves, ID and tag them and get them ready for storage as well as placing new periodicals on the shelves for 2018.

Martin Luther King Multi Purpose Center Celebration

This is a celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday. It includes, speakers, entertainment, tables for community groups to tell what they do and provide services. Volunteers are needed to assist vendors with set up, general event set up and assisting guests as they arrive to the correct location within the school. Volunteer age minimum age 16+ (14 with adult).

Sunday Supper: Break Bread and Break Barriers

Come together with other community members for a family-style meal and discussion in the tradition of Dr. King's Sunday Suppers. Guests will discuss relevant topics in a safe space while hearing one another's thoughts, led by a table moderator. The goal of having this dialogue is to allow all of us to learn more about one another, the issues effecting us and those around us, and maybe even learn more about themselves. Once you register, you will receive a link for a Sign-up Genius site where you will be asked to sign up for an appetizer, salad or dessert to share with your table of 5-6 guests.
