Weather, Flooding Advisories for Tuesday

The National Weather Service calls for light snow starting Tuesday evening and ending around noon Wednesday.

• Winter Weather Advisory in effect from February 9, 06:00 PM EST until February 10, 12:00 PM EST

It also calls for possible coastal flooding in southern Westchester Tuesday morning and Tuesday night.

• Coastal Flood Advisory in effect from February 9, 10:00 PM EST until February 10, 01:00 AM EST
• Coastal Flood Advisory in effect from February 9, 09:00 AM EST until February 9, 01:00 PM EST

Putnam County might only see 1-2 inches more snow. Rockland could get 1-3 inches. Westchester could get 2-4 inches.

But there’s again a big caveat.

“When you have an upper level low pressure over the Great Lakes, and a departing coastal storm… you can get a weak trough to set up between the areas of low pressure,” explains Bill Potter of Hudson Valley Weather. “This is known as a “Norlun” trough. The vertical motion in these systems is quite strong, and you can get enhanced area of precipitation (usually snow). The trouble with these systems… is they are notoriously difficult to forecast. The band of snow is usually rather narrow, and 20 miles can mean the difference between a dusting, and 6 inches of snow (something we are VERY familiar with this winter).”
