NEW HYDE PARK, NY — Northwell Health has appointed Matthew Weiss as senior vice president and chair of the Department of Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital.
Weiss, who currently serves as deputy physician-in-chief and director of the surgical oncology program at Northwell Cancer Institute, will also become executive director of Northwell’s surgery service line in 2027.
He will succeed Gene Coppa, MD, who has led the department for 18 years and will transition to chair emeritus of the medical school and emeritus executive director of the surgery service line.
Coppa will remain senior vice president of surgical services and continue helping oversee the growth and development of Northwell’s surgical programs, according to the health system.
“For nearly two decades, Dr. Coppa has helped define surgical excellence at Northwell, building a service line rooted in quality, innovation and an unwavering commitment to patients,” said John D’Angelo, MD, Northwell Health’s president and CEO. “Dr. Weiss is the right leader to carry that legacy forward.”
Weiss joined Northwell from Johns Hopkins in 2019 and has focused his career on treating pancreatic, liver and other hepatobiliary diseases. He has contributed to more than 350 peer-reviewed publications covering areas including cancer genomics, predictive biomarkers, precision medicine and new therapeutic approaches.
Since joining Northwell, Weiss has helped expand the health system’s cancer care through new technology, treatments and surgical approaches.
“Clinical excellence for a surgical program is a prerequisite for me,” Weiss said. “Building on the success of Dr. Coppa’s tenure, we will focus on quality, data-driven care and an emphasis on academics and teaching the next generation of medical students, residents and eventual surgeons.”
Weiss said he also plans to expand surgical research, increase participation in clinical trials and introduce additional technology and innovation across the health system.
He previously helped develop a multidisciplinary approach within Northwell’s surgical oncology program, bringing together surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, nutritionists and geneticists to coordinate cancer care.
Weiss earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University. He completed his surgical residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and fellowships in complex general surgical oncology and hepatobiliary surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and specializes in pancreatic, liver and hepatobiliary surgery.
“Matt is a proven leader, and his vision for advancing surgical excellence, fostering a data-driven approach and championing multidisciplinary care aligns perfectly with the foundation we’ve meticulously built at Northwell,” Coppa said.
