Bethpage Man Accused Of Scamming Woman Out Of $27K, Police Say

A Bethpage man was arrested after attempting to scam a 62-year-old woman out of $27,000, police say.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — A Bethpage man was arrested last week after attempting to scam a 62-year-old woman out of $27,000, police said.

Nassau County police said 31-year-old Jyoti Jyoti was responsible for a scheme that instructed the woman to withdraw money from her bank account to resolve a malware issue on her computer. According to police, the woman received a notification on her computer of the alleged malware issue, and was given a phone number to call. Upon calling the number, police said, the woman was instructed to withdraw the $27,000 and meet “a bank agent” in the parking lot.

The woman then withdrew the money, took it to the parking lot and handed it to the “bank agent,” police said. She was told she would receive a receipt for the payment the next day, but reported the scheme after receiving nothing, police said.
