Bites Nearby: Pisces One Seafood Restaurant

Fresh, simple and straightforward seafood.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, New Hyde Park Patch picks a restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

Pisces One has everything a seafood lover could ask for.

“We have fresh fish, a full bar, and lobsters,” says Owner Dino Kontogiannis.

Kontogiannis has owned the Union Turnpike corner restaurant for 33 years. It serves a bountiful selection of simply prepared and straightforward seafood in an atmosphere that is equally simple and straightforward.

As explained on the menu, freshness and locality are a priority. Pisces One purchases all of their fish daily from Hunts Point fish market in the Bronx and other local vendors. Most of the seafood comes from American waters with the exception of several foreign water fish that are flown in every day.

Among the top seafood selections from the dinner menu are the filet of sole with a choice of crabmeat or spinach and feta stuffing, and horseradish-crusted Norwegian salmon, simply broiled with breadcrumb and herbs. Every entrée comes with soup, salad, potato/rice and a vegetable.

Other options include shrimp, scallops and lemon sole which can be broiled or fried to your preference. If you are in the mood for lobster, both twin tails and whole Maine lobster are offered. Pasta, chicken, lamb and steak dishes are available for the land lovers; and for those who just can’t decide, there is surf and turf.

The restaurant is open for lunch Tuesday through Friday with a menu that showcases a more casual list of kabobs, salads and fish sandwiches.

Seasonal specials are offered upon availability. During this time of year, red snapper, tuna and Mediterranean bass are likely catches to be featured on the specials blackboard.

Catering for small parties and takeout service are available.
