Children, 2 And 5, Left Unattended in Nassau Driveway; Grandmother Arrested: Police

The grandmother had left the two children in the care of a 13-year-old relative, who went out and left them home alone, police say.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — A New Hyde Park woman was arrested after leaving her grandchildren, ages 2 and 5, home alone with a 13-year-old, who went out and left them unsupervised, police said.

According to Nassau County police, the incident took place on Thursday at 1:15 p.m. at a Covert Avenue home.

Officers responded to the residence after a report of children left unattended in a driveway, police said.

After an investigation, it was determined that Claudia Garcia Zelaya, 51, left her 2-year-old male and 5-year-old male grandchildren home alone with a 13-year-old female relative, police said.

Further investigation revealed that the 13-year-old left home and the children were left unsupervised for an unknown amount of time, police said.

Garcia Zelaya was placed under arrest without incident, police said.

The children were unharmed and released to a family member, police said.

Garcia Zelaya was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, police said.

She was arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
