Cooling Center Locations During Heatwave

The Town of North Hempstead opened cooling centers in order to help residents beat the heat during the current heatwave.

Town of N. Hempstead: With summer temperatures peaking, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the North Hempstead Town Board announced the opening of cooling centers across the Town this week to help residents stay cool, avoiding heat exhaustion. These sites offer residents air conditioning, cold water, and a place to sit and relax while they escape forecasted temperatures in the 90s. Call 311 for more information about hours of operation.

Four cooling centers in Nassau County will be open from Tuesday through the weekend from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

• Mitchel Field Complex — 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale, 516-572-0400

• Wantagh Park Community Center — 1 King Rd., Wantagh, 516-571-7460

• Grant Park — 1625 Broadway, Hewlett, 516-571-7821

• Cantiague Park — 480 West John St., Hicksville, 516- 571-7058

The following tips may help you stay cool and comfortable all summer long:

  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Wear clothing that is light-colored, lightweight, loose and absorbent. Cotton is a good choice.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables to replace nutrients.
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat when going outdoors.
  • Take cool baths and shower once or twice a day.
  • Limit caffeine and alcoholic drinks.
  • Check the daily heat index in the newspaper to alert you to risk of heat related illness.
