Franklin Square Library Gets $250K For Roof And HVAC Replacement

FRANKLIN SQUARE, NY — The Franklin Square Public Library came into some money this week, as Congresswoman Laura Gillen announced the library had been awarded $250,000 in federal funds to replace its roof and HVAC.

According to the 4th-district representative’s office, the investment will help replace an outdate, 10-unit HVAC system that suffers from leaks, mold, poor drainage and issues with its temperature regulation.

In the eyes of library officials, the work will help preserve an institution that sits at “the heart of” the Franklin Square community.

“The Franklin Square Public Library is the heart of our community,” Franklin Square Public Library President Carl Gerrato said. “Thanks to Congresswoman Laura Gillen's leadership and support, this critical investment will help preserve that heart and ensure our library continues to serve the people of Franklin Square for generations to come.”

Gillen’s office said the replacements will also help lower energy costs at the library while protecting library patrons and property in the coming years. In short, Gillen said the money will help protect more than the books at the library.

“Our public libraries are essential to our communities, providing far more than books. The Franklin Square Public Library serves as a community space, cooling center and a safe haven during storms,” Gillen said. “This $250,000 investment will help ensure that the Franklin Square Public Library continues to meet the needs of our community. I was proud to secure this federal funding and look forward to seeing how this investment will help support this library and those who enjoy it.”

The library funding isn’t the first bit of money Gillen has brought to her district in recent months, as the representative also brought a quarter of a million dollars to the Floral Park Fire Department for the purchase of a new truck.

Gillen's office didn't say when construction could be expected to begin on the library, only that the money had been awarded.

For Library Director Aviva Kane, this bit of funding was something to be truly thankful for.

“We are so incredibly thankful for her heart and hard work, which will keep our community’s shared home safe, dry, and thriving for years to come,” Kane said.
