A wrong-way driver who recklessly fled police faces manslaughter charges after he struck a vehicle head-on, killing a pregnant woman in his car and her unborn baby on Sunday afternoon on the Long Island Expressway Service Road between Exits 34 and 35, police say.
According to authorities, police attempted to pull over Courtney W. Corbett, 28, of Brooklyn, who was fleeing the scene of a larceny that occurred at Sephora, located at 1950 Northern Boulevard in Manhasset, at 3:50 p.m. Police say Corbett refused to stop and began driving recklessly on Shelter Rock Road.

Corbett, who had two passengers in his vehicle, then made a right turn into the eastbound lanes of the Long Island Expressway Service Road, heading in the wrong direction, police say. Officers stopped following Corbett due to his reckless driving, causing them to lose contact with the vehicle, police say.
Corbett’s wrong-way driving caused him to strike a 2007 Audi, occupied by a man and two teenage boys, head-on, police say.
The 27-year-old front-seat passenger in Corbett’s vehicle, who was six months pregnant, was found not breathing and unresponsive. The woman and her unborn child were pronounced dead by a physician after being transported to a local hospital.
The driver of the Audi, a 44-year-old man, was hospitalized for back pain and his two passengers, two boys ages 14 and 13, were uninjured, police say.
Corbett was placed under arrest and then transported to a local hospital to be treated for multiple lacerations and contusions. His rear passenger was also hospitalized and treated for a head injury.
Corbett was charged with second-degree manslaughter, two counts of third-degree assault and reckless driving. He was arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
