Man Gets 30 Year Sentence for Shooting Cop in New Hyde Park
Cong Xu was sentenced Tuesday morning.

A man convicted of shooting a Nassau police officer after a New Hyde Park home invasion in August 2013 was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday, Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced.
Cong Xu, of Brooklyn, pleaded guilty in February to first-degree assault and first degree burglary.
On Aug. 14, 2013, residents on Campbell Street in New Hyde Park called 911 to report a burglary in their home. Nassau County Police responded and confronted Xu, who was 22 at the time, as he fled the house. As Xu ran away from the officers, he turned and fired several rounds from a handgun. One of the bullets struck Officer Mohit Arora, 32, in the lower abdomen, the DA’s office said.

Arora was transported to North Shore Hospital and treated for his injuries. He is back on full duty, but is still undergoing physical therapy, Newsday reported.
“Police Officer Arora was shot and seriously injured while doing a dangerous job that thousands of other officers do every day – protecting and serving our communities,” Singas said in a statement. “On behalf of the people of Nassau County, I give my heartfelt appreciation and thanks to Officer Arora and to his brothers and sisters in uniform for their commitment to keeping us safe.”
Xu, a Chinese national, could face deportation, according to Newsday.
