New Hyde Park Kids Grow Love Of Creative Writing

From Herricks Public Schools: After a successful first year, the Herricks Public Schools expanded the weeklong summer writing initiative to middle and high school students during the week of Aug. 12.

The district welcomed a total of 76 students — 57 middle school participants and 19 high school attendees — all of whom sought to expand upon their love of creating writing and desire to strengthen and develop their skills. Genres such as poetry, short stories and creative writing were explored and studied to further each student’s portfolio.

Through the direction of Dr. Michael Imondi, director of English language arts, and English teacher Alan Semerdjian, students participated in various activities that included engaging discussions, literature and writing analyses, guest speaker workshops, mentor text reviews, documentaries and writing challenges.

“One of my favorite parts is the end where we show our final writings,” said junior Allison Greenwood. “Everything is a work in progress until that moment.”

The final day of the program featured a culmination reading where students had the opportunity to share a piece created that week with the support of their peers.
