New Hyde Park Sports Notebook: April 22-28

There are so many sports out in the New Hyde Park area, it can be a full-time job just sifting through all of the action. Luckily, you have Patch and we will get you caught up in one convenient place each week.

Here’s what the local New Hyde Park teams have been up to this week:

New Hyde Park:
Baseball: The Gladiators had a disappointing week, dropping all four games. On April 22 they lost 9-8 to Wantagh. Adam Aponte hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth for the win. He finished 4-for-5 with three RBI.The next day, they were defeated 4-1 by Wantagh. Mike Davanzo pitched a complete game, six-hitter. Kevin Persaud had three RBI. On April 25 they lost 10-1 to Wantagh once again. The difference was a six-run first inning, capped by Kyle Fagan's two-run double.Also, on April 26 they lost to Clarke 9-4. Joe Fusco was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

Softball: On April 22 the girls were shutout 3-0 by Division. Justine Jean took a no-hitter into the seventh inning but was broken up on a double by Geena Fornataro. She allowed two hits, walked six and struck out 11.On April 23 they shutout Carey 3-0. Nicole Decola tossed a three-hitter with seven strikeouts. Lisa Pellegrino was 2-for-4 with a home run. Also, on April 26 they took on Oyster Bay but were shutout 2-0. Jackie Romeo and Kristen Poppe each had RBI singles.

Boys Lacrosse: The Gladiators lost on April 22 to Great Neck South. Despite the loss, Christian Trasolini and Steven Riekert had four goals each. On April 23 they also loss 16-6 to Port Washington. John Crawley had three goals and an assist in the game. Girls Lacrosse: The girls dropped both games this week. On April 22 it was a 11-6 loss to Division. Ariana Bruschi led Herricks with three goals and Jill Graziano added two of her own.On April 27 they defeated were defeated 18-10 by Herricks. Jillian Graziano led NHP with four goals and an assist. Ariana Bruschi scored three goals also.

Herricks:

Baseball: The Highlanders had a rough week, getting swept by Carey. On April 22 they were defeated 6-5. The go-ahead run was scored by Erick Vilchez in the top of the eighth inning on a RBI single. They also lost on April 24 by the score of 4-2. Vilchez recorded the win, tossing 6.1 innings, fanning 12 batters. John Heyer hit a two-run home run. They completed the sweep on April 25 with a 12-1 route. Darren Rodriguez and Nick Zuvic each went 2-for-3 with three runs, a double and RBI.

Softball: On April 23 the girls defeated Plainview JFK 7-5. Seventh grader Marissa Braito drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning.Two days later, they were defeated 10-3 by Baldwin. Sara Heuser was 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI in the victory.

Boys Lacrosse: The Highlanders dropped both of their games this week. On April 23 it was a 11-6 decision to Wheatley/Carle Place. Brian Delay led the way with four goals and Tom Giunta added three.On April 25 they were shutout 8-0 by Valley Stream District. Nick Miller had nine saves in his first shutout.

Girls Lacrosse: They won all three games this week. On April 22 they defeated Carey 15-7. Sabrina Telmo had six goals and one assist and Victoria Marano had three goals.Then on April 24 they defeated Bellmore JFK 17-7. Alison Ricchiuti had an incredible game, scoring five goal and recording four assists. Not to be outdone, Telmo added five more goals of her own. On April 27 they won an 18-10 thriller over New Hyde Park. Lauren Bascelli and Sabrina Telmo each had five goals and an assist in the win.
