Family and fun brings the community together to celebrate the end of summer.

The sun was out for the 's seventh annual Family Fest. Kids played, kayakers paddled and colorful kites soared at North Hempstead's Beach Park on Sunday to end the summer off on a high note.

"This great event is one last chance to celebrate the summer before it fades away," said Supervisor Jon Kaiman.

Hundreds of children and parents gathered along the Long Island Sound to participate in the large array of land and water festivities. Face painting and gardening were among the stations set up along the beach for kids and kids-at-heart. The brisk temperature did not put a damper on the handful of kayakers who ventured around the waters and the winds made for a better day to fly a kite. At times it was hard to decipher if the kids or their parents were having more fun.

"The last time I flew a kite was at this exact event last year," said Stew Morgenstern, who stood barefoot in the sand with a smile on his face.  "It's a great way to bring the community together to share laughs and fun spirits."

Kids wore aprons and used tools to construct a race car or birdhouse, got sticky at the science station when making "goo," and went on an excavation for bones.

"We never miss a year," said Rich Moretta Sr. "We have a strategy to start at one end and work our way through so we don't miss anything."

Those who did not partake in the activities were still able to enjoy the day and listen to the music. Several performers took the stage; the talented entertainment included cover band, Ants Marching that got the crowd grooving to music from the Dave Matthews Band.

"Nothing is better than coming to the beach and seeing everyone out and about," said Kaiman. "This is what it's about; enjoying your local community with family and friends."
