Retirees Honor Inspring Local Graduates

Retirees Recognize Sewanhaka CHSD’s Inspiring Achievers

The Sewanhaka CHSD #2 holds annual awards assemblies that recognize the achievements of its outgoing senior class. The Sewanhaka Federation Teachers Retired (SFTR) proudly sponsors five cash grants for post high school study to seniors who have overcome adversity and exhibited consistent improvement during their high school years. Retired teachers provide the donations for these grants while individual schools select a winner. In May, a committee of retired teachers interviews those winners and selects a district winner.

The winners this year are Serena Sibadan from Elmont High School, Luis Gerardo Ardon-Velasquez from New Hyde Park High School, Jahzeel Reyes from Sewanhaka High School, and the district winner Carmel McAuliffe from H. Frank Carey high School. Each student is a testimony to the strength and determination needed to overcome challenging situations while managing to improve grades and gain entrance to college in senior year. For overcoming what others might find daunting, the SFTR awarded each $300 and the district winner $600.

It is the hope of the SFTR that these students continue to exhibit the unfailing perseverance that has made them role models in their respective communities.
