Town of North Hempstead Welcomes Newest Town Comptroller
Averil Smith was unanimously appointed to the position Tuesday.

The Town of North Hempstead unanimously approved the appointment of the newest Town Comptroller on Tuesday.
Averil Smith, of Elmont, is a Certified Public Accountant with more than 23 years of financial experience in the private sector under her belt.
“I look forward to joining the Town of North Hempstead and working with the Supervisor, Town Board and staff, as we continue to build on the Town’s strong financial legacy,” Smith said in a statement.

Smith previously worked as controller at ABC Home Furnishings and MZ Berger, Inc., a watch manufacturing company. She also has 11 years of experience in various audit roles, including nearly three years at Ernst & Young.
She received her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Brooklyn College and a Master’s degree in Finance from Baruch College.

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said she is confident that Smith will keep the Town on a strong financial foundation. “I believe her previous experience and success at a host of reputable private companies will translate well to municipal government,” she said.
Smith will begin her position as Town Comptroller after Labor Day.
