15YO Accused Of Stabbing Fellow Student Faces Felony Charges

The teen fled the state and was located in Alabama by the FBI.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The 15-year-old who is accused of stabbing a fellow student at New Rochelle High School was arraigned as a juvenile offender Thursday on an attempted murder charge related to the Jan. 18 stabbing. Westchester County District Attorney Anthony A. Scarpino Jr. said that Bryan Stamps, 15, of New Rochelle, was charged with the following:

  • Second-degree attempted murder, a felony
  • First-degree assault, a felony
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor
  • Endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor

Stamps remains in custody at Woodfield Cottage in Valhalla without bail. He is scheduled to appear in Westchester County Court June 5.

The felony complaint alleges that Stamps stabbed another student inside the high school.

He waived extradition to New York May 16.

A Westchester County grand jury indicted Stamps April 16.

According to Scarpino's office, a child who is 13, 14 or 15 years old and commits a felony or other violent act may be treated as a juvenile offender. The case is heard in the Supreme or County Court like adult cases, but the case can be transferred to Family Court. This is decided on a case-by-case basis. Convicted juvenile offenders can be punished like adults. They are placed with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services until their 16th birthday, then can be transferred to prison. Juvenile Offender’s criminal records are not sealed, unless the case is sent to Family Court.

Stamps was the victim of an assault Wednesday at Gemelli Pizzeria, for which no arrests were made because all parties would not cooperate.

The stabbing which Stamps is accused of came a week after the fatal stabbing of Valaree Schwab, 16, allegedly by fellow student Z'inah Brown, 17, in the Dunkin' Donuts on North Avenue near the high school campus. Brown was charged with second-degree murder.
