Up To 3 Inches Rain Spurs Weather Advisories

Wind gusts and high tides are only two of the concerns for Thursday into Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

It could be worse — it could be snow. With heavy rain approaching the Hudson Valley, the National Weather Service has issued flood watches for most of the region. The flood watches are in effect from 1 a.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday for Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties.

The NWS said an area of low pressure moving up from the Appalachians Thursday into Friday will result in a widespread 2 to 3 inches of rain across Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties.

One to 3 inches of rain is forecast for Columbia, Dutchess and Ulster counties.

The heavy rain will result in the potential for flooding of urban, low lying and poor drainage areas, as well as minor river flooding on fast responding streams.

In addition, Westchester County is under a coastal flood advisory and a wind advisory.

The coastal flood advisory is in effect from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday.

There could be tidal departures of around 2 feet above astronomical tides, with some areas experiencing shallow flooding.

The wind advisory is in effect from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, with southeast winds of 20 to 35 mph and gusts of up to 45 mph.

Strong winds could blow down limbs, trees and power lines. Scattered power outages are expected, the NWS said.
