“Fargo” -- No matter how much snow the Northeast gets, it still won’t look as bleak as the frozen tundra of North Dakota. Pair that with Steve Buscemi as a creepy killer, a memorable wood-chipper scene and Frances McDormand as the pregnant cop who solves the case and you’ve got a winner.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” -- There is no better day-off tale than a wise-cracking Matthew Broderick who drags his pals along for a day out in Chicago. Highlights include his takeover of a parade lip-syncing “Twist and Shout,” a spat with a snooty maitre d’ and the beleaguered school principal who tries to nail him for skipping school.

“The Big Lebowski” -- The Dude abides in snow days. If you haven’t seen the Jeff Bridges film about The Dude and the efforts of his bowling buddies to help him right a wrong, you must. Then you’ll understand all the quotes your friends use from this 1998 Coen Brothers hit.

“About a Boy” – The 2002 movie starring Hugh Grant is an immature slacker who grows up when he befriends single mom Toni Collette and her son. Don’t confuse it with the NBC series it’s spawned.

“Emma” -- British television has done many versions over the years, but the best recent version stars Gwyneth Paltrow as a clueless young English woman in the 1800s who’s a disaster at match-making. If you want a modern take, check out “Clueless,” which follows the life of a rich, Beverly Hills teen who loves to meddle in other people’s lives.

“Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” -- It made Keanu Reeves a star, as he and a buddy travel through time for a school project. Enjoy the ‘80s flashback.
