WESTCHESTER, NY — There is relief on the way, but it won't come from Mother Nature.

Westchester County pools and beaches will stay open an extra hour on Wednesday and Thursday, July 1 and 2, as the region faces a sweltering heatwave. The county said the sites will operate from 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with last entry at 7 p.m., to give residents more options to cool off.

The extended hours apply to Playland Pool and Beach in Rye, Glen Island Beach in New Rochelle, Saxon Woods Pool in White Plains, Sprain Ridge Pool and The Brook at Tibbetts in Yonkers, and Willson’s Wave Pool in Mt. Vernon.

Admission fees apply. Parking fees also apply at Playland, Glen Island and Tibbetts. The county said proof of Westchester County residency is required at Glen Island and all pools except Playland.

County Executive Ken Jenkins said the change is meant to address the hot weather and expand access to cooling options.

"The safety of our residents is of utmost importance and we want to provide as many options to stay cool during the upcoming heatwave," Jenkins said. "We hope residents and visitors will take advantage of our pools and beaches to keep cool, stay active and enjoy the outdoors safely."

Westchester County Parks Acting Commissioner Peter Tartaglia also pointed to the role of the facilities during extreme weather.

"Our pools and beaches offer a great place to cool off on a hot summer day," Tartaglia said, "Our lifeguards and staff are on duty and ready to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. These facilities remain an important resource for residents during periods of extreme heat."
